Understanding Stereopsis, Depth Perception & Binocular Vision

What Is Stereoblindness?

Stereoblindness is a term commonly used to describe reduced or absent stereopsis — the ability to use the slightly different images from our two eyes to perceive binocular depth.

Stereopsis is one part of our overall ability to judge depth and distance.

 

A person with reduced or absent stereopsis may therefore have difficulty obtaining the same degree of three-dimensional depth information from both eyes that someone with normal stereopsis experiences.

However, this does not mean that a stereoblind person sees the world as completely flat.

The brain uses many other visual cues to judge depth and distance.

What Is Stereopsis?

Our eyes are positioned slightly apart.

Because of this separation, the right and left eyes view the world from slightly different angles.

The brain can compare these small differences between the two retinal images and use them to help estimate depth.

This binocular depth information is known as stereopsis or stereoscopic vision.

Good stereopsis requires the two eyes and brain to work together effectively.

Is Stereopsis the Same as Depth Perception?

No.

This is an important distinction.

Stereopsis is one component of depth perception, but it is not the only way we judge distance.

The brain also uses monocular depth cues that can be obtained even when viewing with one eye.

These include:

  • Relative size

  • Perspective

  • Overlapping objects

  • Shadows

  • Texture

  • Motion

  • Familiar object size

  • Changes in position as we move

This is why someone with poor stereopsis can still judge depth and navigate everyday environments.

They may simply rely more heavily on these other visual cues.

What Causes Reduced or Absent Stereopsis?

Stereopsis depends on both eyes providing visual information that the brain can combine appropriately.

Reduced stereopsis can therefore be associated with several different visual conditions.

These may include:

Strabismus

Strabismus occurs when the eyes are not properly aligned.

If the eyes are directed towards different locations, normal binocular image combination and stereopsis may be disrupted.

Amblyopia

Amblyopia is reduced vision resulting from abnormal visual development during childhood.

If one eye provides significantly poorer visual information than the other during development, binocular visual function and stereopsis may also be affected.

Anisometropia

Anisometropia occurs when there is a significant difference in refractive prescription between the two eyes.

If the two eyes receive significantly different visual images, comfortable binocular combination may become more difficult.

In children, significant uncorrected anisometropia can also interfere with normal visual development.

Significant Differences in Vision Between the Eyes

Stereopsis generally works best when both eyes provide sufficiently clear and compatible visual information.

Significant differences in visual clarity between the two eyes may therefore reduce stereoscopic performance.

Other Binocular Vision Conditions

Other conditions affecting eye alignment, coordination or binocular visual processing may also influence stereopsis.

The cause cannot be determined simply from the symptom alone.

What Does Stereoblindness Look Like?

People sometimes imagine that stereoblindness makes the entire world appear completely two-dimensional.

For most people, that is not an accurate description.

A person with reduced stereopsis still has many other depth cues available.

They can usually recognise:

  • Which object is closer

  • Which object is farther away

  • The size and shape of objects

  • Perspective

  • Movement

  • Overlapping objects

The difference is that the additional binocular depth information provided by stereopsis may be reduced or absent.

What Symptoms Can Reduced Stereopsis Cause?

Some people with reduced stereopsis may not notice any obvious problem.

If the condition has been present since childhood, the person may have adapted to their way of seeing and may not realise that their binocular depth perception differs from someone else's.

Others may notice difficulty with tasks requiring precise depth judgement.

Possible difficulties can include:

  • Judging exact distances

  • Catching or hitting a moving ball

  • Pouring liquid accurately

  • Reaching precisely for small objects

  • Threading a needle

  • Certain sports

  • Tasks requiring fine hand-eye coordination

  • Judging steps or changes in level in some situations

However, these difficulties are not specific to stereoblindness and can have many other causes.

Can Someone Be Stereoblind Without Knowing It?

Yes.

Someone who has had reduced stereopsis since childhood may not realise that their visual experience is different.

The brain can become very effective at using other visual cues for depth perception.

As a result, many everyday activities may be performed normally.

Stereoblindness may only become apparent during a stereopsis or binocular vision test, or when a person encounters an activity requiring particularly precise binocular depth judgement.

Stereoblindness and Strabismus

Strabismus is one possible reason for reduced stereopsis.

For normal stereopsis, the brain needs sufficiently corresponding visual information from the two eyes.

When an eye is consistently misaligned, the images from the two eyes may not correspond normally.

If strabismus develops during childhood, the developing visual system may adapt to the misalignment in ways that reduce or prevent normal stereopsis.

However, not every person with strabismus has exactly the same level of stereopsis.

The effect depends on factors including:

  • Type of strabismus

  • Size of the deviation

  • Whether it is constant or intermittent

  • Age at which it developed

  • Visual acuity in each eye

  • How the visual system adapted

Stereoblindness and Amblyopia

Amblyopia can also affect stereopsis.

If one eye has significantly reduced visual function, the brain receives unequal visual information from the two eyes.

This can interfere with normal binocular processing.

The effect is particularly important during childhood, when binocular visual function is developing.

Amblyopia and stereoblindness are not the same condition, but they can occur together.

Stereoblindness and Anisometropia

Anisometropia means that the two eyes have significantly different refractive prescriptions.

Without appropriate correction, one eye may receive a much clearer image than the other.

In some individuals, this difference can interfere with binocular visual development or comfortable binocular vision.

Even after spectacle correction, large prescription differences can sometimes produce differences in image size or other optical effects that need to be considered.

This is one reason why complex anisometropic prescriptions may require more than simply making each eye individually clear.

Can Glasses Restore Stereopsis?

This depends entirely on why stereopsis is reduced.

If uncorrected refractive error is contributing to poor visual input from one or both eyes, appropriate optical correction can improve the clarity of the images presented to the visual system.

However, spectacles cannot be assumed to restore normal stereopsis in every person.

If reduced stereopsis is related to longstanding strabismus, amblyopia or other binocular visual conditions, the situation may be more complex.

Therefore, Eye Zen Optical does not claim that a particular pair of spectacles can simply “cure stereoblindness.”

The appropriate approach is to understand the underlying visual problem and determine what optical correction is appropriate.

Why Accurate Spectacle Correction Matters

Although spectacles do not automatically restore stereopsis, providing clear and appropriately balanced visual information to both eyes remains important.

Depending on the individual, spectacle considerations may include:

  • Accurate refractive prescription

  • Differences between the two eyes

  • Astigmatism correction

  • Lens design

  • Optical centration

  • Image-size differences

  • Frame positioning

These factors can become particularly relevant when there is significant anisometropia or another complex prescription.

Stereopsis and Binocular Vision

Stereopsis is one of several functions associated with binocular vision.

Binocular vision involves the two eyes working together as a coordinated visual system.

  • Visual coordination

  • Single binocular vision

  • Stereopsis

Someone can have difficulties in one area without necessarily having identical difficulties in every other aspect of binocular vision.

Why Do 3D Movies Not Work Properly for Some People?

Many 3D movies create the illusion of depth by presenting slightly different images to each eye.

The brain combines these differences to create a stereoscopic effect.

Someone with significantly reduced stereopsis may therefore experience less of the intended 3D effect.

Some people may simply see the movie normally without strong depth.

Others may find the viewing experience uncomfortable depending on their binocular visual function.

Difficulty seeing 3D movies alone, however, does not provide a diagnosis of stereoblindness.

Can You Drive If You Have Reduced Stereopsis?

Depth judgement does not depend exclusively on stereopsis.

Drivers also use many monocular visual cues such as:

  • Relative size

  • Motion

  • Perspective

  • Familiar object size

  • Changes in position

  • Road markings

Therefore, reduced stereopsis does not automatically mean that someone cannot judge distance.

However, driving eligibility depends on applicable vision and licensing requirements, not simply on whether stereopsis is present.

Anyone concerned about whether a visual condition affects driving should seek appropriate professional advice and follow Singapore's current licensing requirements.

Children and Reduced Stereopsis

Binocular visual function develops during childhood.

Conditions that interfere with clear, balanced visual input during this period can potentially affect binocular development.

These can include:

  • Strabismus

  • Amblyopia

  • Significant anisometropia

  • Significant uncorrected refractive error

  • Other visual conditions

Children with suspected eye misalignment, unequal vision between the eyes or other significant visual concerns should receive an appropriate professional eye examination.

Early identification is important because a child's visual system is still developing.

When Should You Seek Professional Assessment?

Consider appropriate professional assessment if you or your child has:

  • An obvious eye turn

  • Significant differences in vision between the eyes

  • Persistent double vision

  • Difficulty achieving comfortable binocular vision

  • Suspected amblyopia

  • Significant anisometropia
